Tree Planting at the football field

Update….

We are pleased to say that every one of the trees planted is growing! Pictures to follow 🙂

Message from the Chairman…

At the 2019 tree wardens workshop, held at Lanhydrock, it was suggested that it would be good to something great in 2020 to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the start of the tree warden scheme.

Having been the tree warden for Dunkeswell Parish Council from the beginning and the Council having just purchased a 3 acre site for both the Air Ambulance Night Landing site and also a Football pitch, it seemed a good ides to plant a hedge along the boundary fencing.  As the Devon Air Ambulance use this site to land I had to think about the height of the trees on maturity and the lie of the land.  So, I chose those that could reach maturity without too much height, good for wildlife with plenty of blossom and fruits.

Covid played its’ part; Our original plans for a larger community event had to be revised downwards considerably.  However we were able to have a few family groups help with the planting and we were delighted that preschool were able to come and help too.  The 597 trees were planted over four days.  The trees were grown by Exmoor trees, grown in cells which made them easy to plant and to give them the best chance we have used mats made from sheep wool to deter weeds and cardboard guards with bamboo canes to protect them.  All of the accessories used are bio-degradable.

John Barrow

The Council would to say a huge thank you to;  The Tree Council, and County Councillor Iain Chubb, without their support in grants, none of this would have been possible.  To Exmoor Trees for their help and advice and supply of healthy plants and to those who helped with planting. As the hedgerow matures this will be something appreciated & enjoyed by the whole community for many years to come and is a great way to mark the 30th anniversary of the tree warden scheme.

The Councillors would also like to say a big thank you to John, who was prepared at one point to plant all the trees/hedging on his own and organised how planting could take place and be done!  However, Help arrived with the help of the families, preschool and members of the football club (socially distanced!), this was much appreciated.

We hope you enjoy looking at the pictures taken during planting.
